Red Lippy Day 2020 and why it is important to seek advice early

Sunday 3rd May 2020 is RED LIPPY DAY in support of Dementia UK, and myself and my colleagues at Woollcombe Yonge are wearing our red lipstick to help Dementia UK provide more Admiralty Nurses to families affected by dementia.

In my profession, I sadly come across many families who are caring for a loved one with this condition, often seeking advice on the practicalities in terms of how they can help that person manage their affairs.

It may be the case that we need to put a Will in place or perhaps Lasting Powers of Attorney to enable others to manage financial and health affairs. Whatever is required, my advice is to always seek guidance as early on as possible. The process can become very difficult, stressful and costly for the family if their loved one has already lost capacity or is simply too unwell to do anything.

When you are faced with having to manage the affairs of another, whether that involves buying their food, paying their bills or selling a property to pay for care, trust me when I say that you will want to sort out the legalities of this early on to enable you to make these decisions. The law unfortunately does not automatically give anyone the legal right to deal with the affairs of others.

At this moment in time, it may be difficult to think about anything else other than the current national state of emergency we see ourselves faced with due to the coronavirus outbreak. Millions of people around the world have been affected by this terrible virus, and many of us are left worrying for our elderly relatives and loved ones.

Whatever situation you are currently facing, our team are here to support you and make life that bit easier wherever possible.

All of us at Woollcombe Yonge Solicitors wish to show our continued support for the many families who are still caring for and mourning the loss of a loved one with dementia, and to extend our sincere thoughts to the millions of families affected by coronavirus.

If you wish to discuss any of the issues raised within this article, please contact Raegan Leather, Associate Solicitor in the team, on 01752 827920 or email rl@wysolicitors.co.uk.
